I have been away from the cycling trainer for a long time, ever since I left Hsinchu by the end of year 2007. Now I find a way back to train on it indoors. Indeed, Taipei is a safer place to cycle at night than Hsinchu. Theoretically I should cycle outdoors. But on the recent issue of Bicycle Club magazine, it mentions a trainer course for intervals. I practice it tonight and it finds me a reason to still stick on it even when I can do real cycling in the mountains. It is interval training, which is dangerous to follow outdoors in a place like Taipei. I have ever trained by intervals but haven’t made any efforts to train hard. Tonight I followed it carefully.
So the course I followed today during a 1-hour training is something like:
- 0-40 min: easy pedaling like 34x13 or 34x14 at 90rpm.
- 40-50min: do Interval training for 6-8 cycles:
-->20 seconds: Full throttle, choose a hard gear. I do it on 50x14 or 50x13.
-->40 seconds: Take it easy, choose a low gear. I do it on 34x14 or 34x13.
- 50-60min: recovery stage. Slow down and keep the heart rate below 65% by the end.
The key to interval training is to maintain the same cadence on both phase. During slowing down, keep the leg spinning too.
